Three traffic officers with the National Police Service (NPS) were caught soliciting bribes from matatu operators. They are seen in a now viral video recently aired by Citizen TV, to be colluding with two members of the public – a man and woman – who take crumpled notes on behalf of these cops.
The NPS Internal Affairs Unit has identified three traffic police that have been taken for disciplinary action as they solicit bribes from matatus plying Kangundo Road routes where an unsuspecting couple is tasked to approach drivers and offer them money at first sight before giving it over to one or more policemen watching nearby.
A video that went viral last week showed two members of the public and three traffic police officers colluding in misconduct on Kangundo Road, Nairobi. The Internal Affairs Unit within National Police Services promptly began investigations after receiving footage from an unknown source, which led to identification of all four individuals involved who will now face stern action for their crimes against society.
The incident occurred along a stretch of road where there is often heavy congestion caused by both law enforcement personnel and motorists alike due to its close proximity to one-way roads near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) but also because it leads into Langata’s commercial hub as well as South C estate housing estates such as Garden Estate amongst others meaning many commuters depart
“Stern disciplinary action is being taken against the officers. Meanwhile. we appreciate Citizen TV for highlighting the matter and do urge members of the public to report to the Unit whenever they identify police officers being involved in acts amounting to corruption or any form of police misconduct.”
