The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a warning following a viral video making rounds on various social media platforms – showing a minor smoking the outlawed drug marijuana while endorsing Roots presidential candidate George Wajackoyah.
Through a statement dated Thursday, June 30, the law enforcement officers have stated that Kenyans spreading and sharing the clip are also participating in the violation of the law.
The police added that spreading the clip further violates the rights of the minor who was recorded smoking marijuana.”Those spreading the clip are also abetting the violation of the law and rights of the minor, and should cease and desist from the onward transmission of the same,” their statement read in part.
According to their statement, the kid is believed to have been influenced by the ongoing political debate regarding the legalisation of marijuana in Kenya.
“The language used in the clip seems to confirm this suspicion, given that reference is made to an ideology propagated by a section of the ongoing politics.
And of extreme concern is the fact that the act and its filming seems to be done by either an adult or adults, all unperturbed by what is transpiring. This is not only wrong and immoral, and infringing on rights of a minor by adults, but outrightly criminal and punishable by law,” the police statement read in part.
