Corporal Joyciline Jepkosgei, was promoted to Sergeant as a reward for winning the silver medal at the 2022 London Marathon.
Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Robert Kibochi lauded the athlete, noting that she is a testament to dedication, discipline and sacrifice.
“We are very grateful for your continuous hard work and for representing Kenya and KDF well.”We wish you the best as competing at such high levels requires a lot of hard work and determination. I am confident that you will continue doing better since you are still young,” stated General Kibochi.
Jepkosgei was elated by the grand gesture and lauded the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for its continued support.
“It is an honour and I am grateful for the promotion. I appreciate the level at which the Kenya Defence Forces takes care of its athlete especially with special regard to physiotherapy,” Jepkosgei stated.
Kenya Army commander, Lieutenant General Peter Njiru, and the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of personnel and logistics, Major General Muthuri Kiugu witnessed the occasion.
In attendance too were physical readiness and sports defence boss, Colonel Benjamin Kiprop, and the Defence Forces Sergeant Major WOI Elijah Koranga.
Jepkosgei finished second at the 2022 London Maraton clocking 2.18.07 behind Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw who was first at 2:17.26 on Sunday, October 2.
Kenya’s Judith Korir finished fourth in the race. Despite the small time difference, the Ethiopian broke Kenya’s dominance in the annual women’s race.
Notably, Jepkosgei’s big breakthrough came in 2019 when she won both the half marathon and marathon in New York City in a time of 1:10:07 and 2:22:38 respectively.
