Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has landed a four-year deal with top Belgian club KAA Gent in a deal estimated at Ksh 400 Million.
The 24-year old Okumu joins from Sweden where he was a key defense pillar last season as Elfsborg FC finished as runners up in the top tier Allsvenskan league.
His recent exploits saw his linked with top clubs in Scotland and France. His performance for Harambee Stars at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations attracted many scouts.
Okumu’s star started to shine at Kakamega High School from where he joined Western side Chemelil Sugar. His first professional stint outside Kenya was at South Africa with PSL side Free State Stars where he managed seven appearances in the 2016/17 season.
He then moved to the US to join Major League Soccer side Real Monarchs for two seasons before his last club Elfsborg FC of Sweden came calling.
Founded in 1900, KAA Gent is nicknamed The Buffalos plays their home games at the 20,000 capacity GHELAMCO-arena. Other Kenyans who have featured for the Belgian club KAA Gent are Robert Mambo and John “Mo” Muiruri.
