A girl who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination at Osiri primary school in Nyatike Sub County and scored 135 marks has been rescued from early marriage.
Mikeyo location chief David Oula said they rescued the girl who has been living with a Ugandan, in his 40s, said to be offering casual labour in the area.
Mr Oula said the parents of the girl admitted to having given out their girl for marriage insisting that their daughter who sat for the KCPE examination in 2022 and is mentally unstable is aged 22 years and hence not a minor.
The area chief said the mother of the girl admitted that the Ugandan recently gave her Ksh.3000 as startup capital for business before they released the girl.
He said their preliminary investigation has established that the Ugandan who works as a gold miner has been in a forced love affair with the girl since she was in Class Six and the family of the parents has been receiving financial support in exchange.
The area chief said the girl revealed that she has been yearning to continue with her education in secondary school but the parents insisted that she must get married to the man.
Mr Oula said they came to the rescue of the girl following continued calls by the neighbours who claimed the girl has been crying both day and night pleading with the Ugandan man to release her back to her parents so that she can continue with her studies.
The administrator noted the case has been handed over to the police and Macalder police station. Mr Oula said he is optimistic that the girl will be served justice.
