The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said on Thursday that the suspension of campaigns in areas where elections were cancelled would remain until emergency situations have ended. Commissioner Abdi Guliye said that most areas were due to emergencies and that the campaign period had ended. The elections in those areas will be held as soon as their current process is concluded.
“Campaigns have concluded, this was an eventuality arising from an emergency and therefore we have not opened up the campaign period. The suspension still applies because we will have the elections immediately we conclude the current process,” he said.
The IEBC suspended elections for the gubernatorial seats in Kakamega and Mombasa, citing errors on ballot papers.
They later announced that the elections will be held on August 23.
